Interview with Surface Medic Franchisee – Gary Hacking

Gary Hacking from Lancashire, whose previous career had been a Technical Instructor in Aircraft Engineering, recognised that he carried many of the transferable skills needed to start a Surface Medic Franchise, 6 months into the business we asked Gary some frequently asked questions.

Did you enjoy franchise training?

Yes! The first 4 weeks went so quick, from day one you start at the beginning with what is in essence the easiest repair and work onwards from there. Each day you build a little more on what you’ve learnt previously and just practice, practice, practice, I left the training centre confident.

What part of franchise training did you enjoy the most?

The most enjoyable aspect of the training is watching how you and your fellow trainees gain in skill and confidence every day. Each day you take on more repairs and sometimes amaze yourself with a repair…Once the working day is done its good you’re all in the same hotel as it gives you chance to get to know each other properly and unwind from the training.

What was the last surface you repaired?

My last repair was for a Building Company on a new housing development. I had been doing stonework for most of the day but the weather turned and I went into one the houses about to be occupied and removed quite a few scratches from a Stainless Steel Hob.

How is life as a Surface Medic franchisee?

The best part of running your own business is you dictate what you do and when. Certainly you have to put the effort and hours in to earn the money and get the clients, but if you need a morning off to see a school play, go the doctors/dentist then you only answer to yourself. It is hard work and you have to put some legwork in to build your client base but in the end it’s worth it.
